Year 5

Welcome to Year 5 at Chapel Street. We hope this will be an exciting year full of stimulating and creative learning opportunities as your child continues progressing through key stage 2. Year 5 will provide academic challenges that will allow them to successfully grow in confidence as a learner as well as develop a greater degree of independence.

The Year 5 teachers are Mr Heath (5JH), Miss Lee (5SL) and Mr Scott (5BS), with Mr Anderson, Mr Box, Mrs Davis, Mrs Conway and Mrs Wos as our Teaching Assistants. The doors open at 8.40, and the children will be reading for 10 minutes every day. At 8.50 they have 15 minutes of responding to marking. This is vital learning time. It is important that children are here for this as they will be addressing misconceptions from the previous day. The morning break is at 10:10 – 10:30, with lunch at 12:30 – 1:30. The end of the day is 3:15.

Children are expected to read for 5-10 minutes (or longer) every day with an adult while being asked questions. These can include ‘on the line’ questions, where the answer can be found in the text, ‘outside the lines’, where you check their understanding of certain words and ‘between the lines’ questions, which look at inference and what is going on in the underlying story of a text. Children should then record this in their reading records and bring them in every Friday to be counted for our award assembly.

Every Wednesday, the children will be doing Games. They should make sure their PE kit is in school including warm jogging bottoms/leggings during the colder months. On Fridays we will be going Swimming and children must have their swimming kits including a cap for children with long hair.

Our topics for this term will be Narrative Writing in Literacy, Vikings in Topic and Forces and Space in Science. We look forward to the learning journey that this will take us on. We also will be having several specialists coming in to work with us during our Science work. Please refer to the curriculum map for more information.

We are always more than happy to speak to you about any queries or concerns you have and you can contact us after school or via the school office.

We look forward to the year ahead.

Mr Heath, Mr Scott and Miss Lee
