Welcome to Year 5 at Chapel Street. We hope that this will be an exciting year full of stimulating and creative learning opportunities as your child continues to progress through Key Stage 2. Year 5 will provide academic challenges that will allow the children to successfully grow in confidence, as well as developing a greater degree of independence.
The Year 5 teachers are Mrs. Mawdsley (5A), Miss Livesey (5B and Year Group Leader) and Miss Aslam (5C). We also have a talented team of teaching assistants and support staff, who work alongside the children.
The doors open at 8.40 and learning begins straight away. Therefore, it is vital that your child arrives at school on time, ready to learn. The morning break is at 10.10, with lunch at 12.35. Home time is at 3.15. Children are encouraged to bring a healthy snack to enjoy at morning break. Alternatively, a variety of healthy snacks are sold at 8.30 each morning, on the snack trolley in the playground.
All children will have a reading book that they must bring to school each day and take home each night. Please read with your child on a daily basis, discussing what you have read and asking questions to check your child’s understanding. Please sign your child’s reading record book as these will be checked each day and points will be awarded that will be counted for our awards assembly. Your child will be given a list of spellings to learn at the beginning of each half term. Five words will be tested each week. Spelling tests will take place every Wednesday.
Children must be dressed smartly, in full school uniform. They must have a waterproof coat and sensible, black school shoes. The children will have two PE sessions a week and must ensure that they have the correct kit in school on these days. PE sessions are as follows:
5A- Monday and Friday
5B- Thursday and Friday
5C- Thursday and Friday
Our topics this year will be based around a different book each half term. The Year 5 topics this year are: Lifecycles, Anglo Saxons, Materials, Space, Forces and Changes in the Environment. We look forward to the learning journey that this will take us on.
We are always happy to speak to you about any concerns that you may have. We value the work that you do, at home, to support your child and we look forward to sharing their success with you.
Miss Livesey, Mrs Mawdsley and Miss Aslam.
