Maths
This policy reflects the values and philosophy of the teaching and learning of Mathematics at Chapel Street Primary School.
At Chapel Street Primary School we aim to nurture children to become confident mathematicians by teaching mathematical skills and concepts in a creative and challenging way.
Aims of the National Curriculum (2014)
Mathematics is a creative curriculum which is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. It is vital for solving practical tasks and real life problems.
How is maths taught at Chapel Street Primary School?
Our children will participate in hands on investigative lessons, using concrete resources to develop an understanding of their skills which will enable them to move towards using pictorial representations. Children will then be able to use their developing understanding to solve more abstract problems. Children will be able to use number fact knowledge to solve problems with fluency and accuracy. Each child will be engaged in mental calculations, number, times tables and number compliments. Children will be encouraged to reason mathematically and communicate their findings to one another.
At Chapel Street Primary School we use the White Rose Maths Hub Medium Term Planning to ensure coverage and progression for each year group. Teachers will evaluate lessons and learning to plan for next steps in a variety of ways to ensure that pupils’ learning is moving on and addressing specific needs of our children. In line with the National Curriculum 2014, we are providing challenges and investigations for children to gain a greater depth of understanding of their year groups learning objectives to reach mastery.
What next for Chapel Street Primary School?
We will be continuing to develop our approach to Teaching Mastery.
We will be running a series of Maths workshops to support our parents and carers in helping their children.
