What is Pupil Premium?

Pupil Premium is funding allocated to schools for the purpose of boosting the attainment of pupils from low income families. It is intended to enable schools to provide targeted support to help children reach their full potential.

Funding is allocated for children who are looked after by the Local authority and for every child which is registered for Free School Meals.

Children can have Free School Meals if their parents receive any of the following:

  • Income Support
  • Income Based Jobseekers Allowance
  • the guaranteed part of Pension Credit
  • Income Related Employment and support Allowance (ESA)
  • Universal Credit (from 2014 details of this qualifying income may change)
  • Child Tax Credit (CTC) provided they are not entitled to Working Tax Credit or an amount paid for
  • childcare with your CTC. HM Revenues & Customs must also have worked out your household income as £16,190 a year or less. This income limit lasts until April 2015 but may go up in future years
  • if you are entitled to a Working Tax Credit run-on payment for four weeks after stopping work or reducing working hours to under 16 hours per week.

It is really important to make sure that all children who qualify are registered for Free School Meals. Registering is the only way to ensure the school receives the Pupil Premium funding to spend on your child, even if you choose to send a packed lunch or your child already has a free lunch as they are in either Reception, Year 1 or Year 2.

You can apply online at or ask at the school office for a form to complete.

We can apply on your behalf, we will need some details from you – please see a member of the office staff.
